Today had a lot of crappiness in it. My camera is pretty effectively dead. David figured out that it works if you turn off the monitor, set it to Auto, and don't touch any buttons... so at least we'll make it through Christmas pictures. As for anything else... not so much :( Sigh.

It would figure, as these things go, that it would die today. I had a friend coming over for Christmas photos. Murphy's Law, yes? Thankfully, iridescent_eye let me borrow her beloved camera, and the day was saved. Since I didn't know all the fancy settings on hers, there is some Photoshop work that will need done for my friend's pictures, but overall it went well.

While I was waiting for my friend to get ready, I snapped some really nice kitty shots :) This is Jazz, the kitty who is in constant motion. iridescent_eye's camera is fast enough to catch him!

A kitty, behind the cut.Collapse )

So.... I want, and maybe can have in a few months... but which? And which lenses? And which brands of lenses? Comments please!

Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR

Canon Digital Rebel XTI Digital SLR

Would you go with the stock lens on the XTi? Why?
Does anyone know a site as good as Steve's, but for lenses instead of cameras?

I'm going to get a 2 gb card, battery grip, extra battery, filter kit, one of those rear viewfinder hood things (yea, can't recall what they are called) and camera backpack with either one. Which camera backpacks do you guys like? I like the looks of one of the Canon ones off Amazon, but I'm very open to real world suggestions!

I'm also interested in getting a wireless remove and secondary flash - suggestions on either?

Just two, these are from this evening up on Bays Mtn. Only two though, I forgot both my tripod and my monopod.

Pretty evening flowers from our yard. Post-processing was done on these. I'm too sleepy to tell if these are actually good or if they're just pretty.

This way to flowers!Collapse )

We'd hoped that more would be in bloom on today's outing, but sadly much of the park was still dormant. I think iridescent_eye got some wildlife shots (she's got a Canon 20D with a very nifty zoom), but I didn't get any wildlife. The wind foiled most of my nature shots, but here's some that weren't too bad (IMO, anyway).

Behind the cut is a picture you've already seen. I'm interested in feedback on the various photoshopped versions. I have different feelings for each, but I want to hear your input on it. I'm not fond of photoshopping, but it has its place... and I'm seeing what that might be. Normally I'm ok with how the camera itself catchs things, but I am apt to agree with those that say the Canon doesn't capture enough contrast at times, though on this photo the contrast in places was just odd (her hand, for example, captured an awfully lot of light).

Please try to consider each photo individually against the original, not as a series with the other photoshopped photos.

Without further commentary, the photos...Collapse )

Commentary and suggestions very welcome!

iridescent_eye has posted some pictures she took of little sister here. Lovely black & whites, set 1 of 2!

This does so make me drool more over her camera, hehe. One day, I will have one like that!

For my records, the crosspost is here. I need to go dig out my crossposts from Sat/Sun and link them too. Agenda for tomorrow, I do believe.
